|Contract Period:||2018 – Present|
Windjammer is a bungalow located directly on the north coast of Devon within the village of Lee. The owners of the property proposed to undertake the demolition of the existing house and the construction of a new dwelling as their residence.
The practice was approached by the client in early 2018 with a brief to explore the options for developing the property in such a manner that it may take advantage of, and sensitively respond to, the wonderful landscape that it sits within.
The spectacular nature of the landscape is recognised with the designation of the local environment as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The replacement dwelling at Windjammer has been carefully developed as a design, following a process that examined options of retaining / extending the existing house as well as a range of new build alternatives. There were numerous problems with the layout, construction quality and siting of the existing house and the key objective of having an easy and fluid connection between the inside and outside spaces could not be achieved while retaining the existing house and it was decided that the design of a new replacement house would be developed as a result.
The design of the house seeks to take advantage of the wonderful views to the north and west in particular, while creating garden areas that are protected from the sometimes unforgiving sea winds. The separate studio to the west of the main house is ancillary to the use of the house as is the separate garage building.
